Primm Valley Golf Club
Primm
Valley Golf Club, located near the California/Nevada border 45 minutes
south of Las Vegas, is host to two Tom Fazio championship courses. The
Lakes course was the original, opening in 1997 and then the encore Desert
course came aboard in 1999. The finishing hole on the Lakes is picturesque,
but also a challenging 445-yard par 4 with water on the right and bunkers
on the left. The Desert plays longer than the Lakes at over 7,100 yards
and isn't necessarily the "target golf" style most desert courses are
labeled with.
Primm Valley Golf Club
The Primm Valley Golf Club sits in the middle of the barren desert like
an oasis. With nothing but weeds and dirt for as far as the eye can see,
the award-winning golf course is literally an island in the middle of
nothingness.
The two 18-hole courses sit just off Interstate 15, the main artery for
California travelers heading to Las Vegas, at Yates Well Road, four miles
from the Nevada border city of Primm. About three-plus hours from Los
Angeles and 45 minutes from Las Vegas, these two courses offer something
for every level of golfer.
This golf course is a very friendly layout and you can score here without
having a feeling of imminent doom on every hole," said PGA Director
of Golf John Scappatura. "We are a bit off of the beaten path, which
means that we almost always have availability for tee times. Everyone
who does make the trip out here though appreciates our conditioning, the
price, and the friendly atmosphere."
Primm Valley opened its famous Tom Fazio-designed Lakes Course in 1997
and brought Fazio back to design its Desert Course in 1999. The Lakes
Course has been winning awards since its inception for its rolling fairways,
bent grass greens and water features.
The course has three sets of tees, playing to only 2,904 yards from the
ladies tees, a comfortable 6,323 yards from the middle tees, and 6,840
yards from the back tees. Painted Desert has endeared itself to women,
as they aren't pushed into having to make heroic drives. There are no
tricks and no gimmicks and everything is right there in front of you.
However, Painted Desert does retain the narrowness that designer Jay Moorish
set into the original plan, and still requires that players hit thoughtful,
well-executed shots.
